Mendes is the largest firm in the country entirely devoted to the practice of insurance law.

Rob’s broad understanding of an insurer’s requirements while in the throes of a complex coverage dispute has been gained from over 25 years of experience and is a significant asset for any client.

An Equity Partner since 1993 and a member of the Firm’s Management Committee, Rob has served as litigation counsel in a wide array of direct and reinsurance matters for his foreign and domestic clients.  When litigation is not the preferred route to complex claims resolution, those same clients have come to rely upon Rob’s talents and creativity to negotiate favorable settlements or pursue alternative means towards dispute resolution.

Most notably, Rob has extensive experience in the litigation, trial and appeal of insurance coverage disputes, having been retained as lead counsel in numerous coverage actions and arbitrations throughout the United States involving toxic chemicals, silicone implants, asbestos, silica, and large-scale environmental contamination.  His work has also encompassed various claims arising out of the professional liability of insurance brokers and agents, directors and officers, architects and engineers, lawyers and financial institutions.

Companies with whom Rob has litigated and settled coverage disputes include Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing (3M), Texas Eastern Gas Transmission, E.I. Dupont de Nemours & Company, Reichhold Chemical, Ashland and Universal Studios, as well as various electric utilities such as Pennsylvania Power & Light and Consumers Energy.

Rob is a member of the New York State Bar Association, the New York County Lawyers Association and the Professional Liability Underwriting Society (PLUS).

Rob is also an avid fisherman and enjoys the sports of swimming and track and field.  He is a long-time board member and past President of the Westchester County Swim Conference, which oversees dual meet and championship competition each summer for over 1,500 age-group athletes on 30 member clubs.
